    Cantonese tomato & potato pork bone soup (蕃茄薯仔豬骨湯) is a classic Chinese soup. Not only is it simple, but also the soup is delicious. Most kids love this soup too! This tomato potato pork soup recipe has both instant pot and top stove methods.

    Tomato & Potato Pork Bone Soup (蕃茄薯仔豬骨湯)

    In Asian culture, people like to use bones to make soup or broth. This tomato & potato pork bone soup is a Chinese style soup and very common in Canton area, China. And, I remembered my mom made this soup all the time when I was a kid. The best to use home grow tomatoes because it tastes even sweeter. 

    Generally, kids love this soup because it's a little bit sweet and sour which can increase their appetite. This recipe has both instant pot pressure cooker and top stove cooking methods. 

    Tomato potato soup instant pot and top stove methods: 

    I like to use an instant pot pressure cooker to make the soup because it’s fast and simple to put all the ingredients and let the pressure to cook for 60 minutes and natural release. However, if you use a top stove boiling method, add 2 more cups of water (total 8 cups) after the water is boiling and turn fire to medium low simmering for 90 minutes. 

    What are the ingredients for Chinese tomato & potato soup:  

    The main ingredients are tomatoes, potatoes, pork bones and water.

    Cooking tips for tomato & potato pork soup: 

    • Some people like to boil the bones to get rid of fat and blood. I normally just use hot water to wash the bones because it is easier and faster. Then, I use a strainer to remove fat when the soup is done. 
    • If you use a top stove boiling method, add 2 more cups of water (total 8 cups) after the water is boiling and turn fire to medium low simmering for 90 minutes. 
    • Remember to add salt to your taste.

    Is this soup creamy? 

    No, it is not creamy. The potatoes and tomatoes are supposed to cut into chunks. The soup is like a broth. 

    Do you have a lid on when boiling the soup on the top stove? 

    Yes, cover with a lid to boil and simmer the soup. 

    What kind of bone should I use? 

    Most people use pork bones. Some like to use pork neck bones, pork rib bones, pork loin or pork chops. You can use any kinds of pork bones or pork meat to make this soup.

    3. Put tomatoes, potatoes, 3 pieces of pork bones and 6 cups of water into an instant pot pressure cooker. Cover the lid, close the vent and Manuel 60 minutes at high pressure. Then, quick release.
