    What is Loco moco?

Loco moco is a popular Hawaiian dish. Also, loco means “crazy”, moco is used because it sounded good and rhythms with loco.

The traditional loco moco has white rice, topped with a hamburger patty, pan fried egg and brown gravy. However, nowadays people use different types of meat such as chicken, pork and shrimp. Or tofu as an alternative.

What are the ingredients for loco moco Hawaii?

In this loco moco recipe, I used beef patties, eggs, brown gravy powder, water, vegetable oil and white rice.

Hawaiian dish loco moco usually serves with macaroni salad as a side. But, to make this loco moco recipe simple, I used frozen vegetables as a side in order to balance out the protein in this dish.

Cooking tips for how to make loco moco:

    • Pan fry the beef patties for a few minutes until it’s cooked.
    • Cook the eggs like the sun side up. I like the yolk a little bit runny because it tastes great when mixed with the hot rice and gravy.
    • Put water and gravy powder into a pot. Stir it very well. Don't turn on the fire until it's well mixed. Keep stirring until it’s boiling and bubbling. When the gravy sauce gets cold, it becomes thicker.

    FAQs:

Can I use other types of rice?

Yes, you can and normally we use white rice like jasmine rice and Japanese rice. Some like to use brown rice because it is healthier and has more texture.

What sides can I serve with loco moco?

Typically, Hawaiian loco moco is served with macaroni salad. However, to make this dish simple and balance out the protein portion, I used frozen vegetables. You can use other vegetables as a side.
