What is Loco moco?
Loco moco is a popular Hawaiian dish. Also, loco means “crazy”, moco is used because it sounded good and rhythms with loco.
The traditional loco moco has white rice, topped with a hamburger patty, pan fried egg and brown gravy. However, nowadays people use different types of meat such as chicken, pork and shrimp. Or tofu as an alternative.
What are the ingredients for loco moco Hawaii?
In this loco moco recipe, I used beef patties, eggs, brown gravy powder, water, vegetable oil and white rice.
Hawaiian dish loco moco usually serves with macaroni salad as a side. But, to make this loco moco recipe simple, I used frozen vegetables as a side in order to balance out the protein in this dish.
Cooking tips for how to make loco moco:
- Pan fry the beef patties for a few minutes until it’s cooked.
- Cook the eggs like the sun side up. I like the yolk a little bit runny because it tastes great when mixed with the hot rice and gravy.
- Put water and gravy powder into a pot. Stir it very well. Don't turn on the fire until it's well mixed. Keep stirring until it’s boiling and bubbling. When the gravy sauce gets cold, it becomes thicker.

Yes, you can and normally we use white rice like jasmine rice and Japanese rice. Some like to use brown rice because it is healthier and has more texture.

1. Pour ½ tablespoon of vegetable oil in the non-stick pan. Then, turn on the fire medium high.
2. After, place 3 raw beef hamburger patties in the non-stick pan. Pan fry it for a couple minutes.
3. Then, flip the other side and pan fry for a couple minutes until it is cooked and set it aside.
4. Next, clean the grease and pour ½ tablespoon of vegetable oil. Crack 3 eggs and pan fry them. (Cook them like the sun side up.)
5. The following step, pour 2 & ¼ cups of water into the pot.
6. Put ½ cup of brown gravy powder. Stir it very well, then turn on the fire medium high. (Don't turn on the fire until it's well mixed.)
7. Keep stirring the sauce until it's bubbling. (When the gravy sauce gets cold, it becomes thicker.)
8. Heat up or stir fry a small 12 oz of frozen vegetables. This is for the side.
9. Lay a cup of cooked rice and put the mixed vegetables on the side of the plate.
10. After that, put the cooked beef patty on top of the rice. Then, pour some gravy sauce over the patty and put the pan fried egg on top of the patty.
