Taro ice cream is a popular Asian flavored ice cream. It is light purple and similar to ube, purple yam. However, taro is not the same as ube. Taro is a tropical root plant and food staple in African, Oceanic and South Asian cultures. In general, taro is less sweeter than ube.
Also, most taro ice creams don't taste much like taro at all because they do not use fresh taro root. Often, it uses taro powder instead. In this homemade taro root ice cream recipe, I use taro boba powder.
Asians love to add taro flavored into their food and drink such taiyaki, taro buns, taro boba drinks and taro sago dessert. Taro ice cream is one of my childhood favorites and I miss it so much. Therefore, I try to make it at home.
What are the ingredients for a homemade taro root ice cream recipe?
The ingredients for homemade taro root ice cream are milk, sweet condensed milk, taro boba powder and heavy whipping cream.
Cooking tips for how to make taro ice cream:
- Warm milk in the microwave for 30-45 seconds, add taro boba powder and sweet condensed milk. Mix it well and let it cool down.
- Beat the heavy whipping cream until it thickens.
- Pour taro powder mixture with heavy whipping cream and mix it well.
- Cove with a plastic wrap and freeze it for 8 hours or overnight.
- After freezing, take out the ice cream for 1-2 minutes before scooping out.

4. Stir and mix it well. Let it set aside and cool down. (If you want to speed up the process of cooling off, put the mixture into an ice bath.)
5. In the meanwhile, pour 1 cup of heavy whipping cream into a mixing bowl.
6. Beat the cream until it thickens.
7. The following step, pour the taro mixture from step 4 into the whipped cream.
8. Mix the taro mixture and whipped cream.
9. After, pour the mixture from step 8 into another container and cover with a plastic wrap. Freeze it for 8 hours or overnight.
10. Lastly, remove the plastic wrapper after freezing for 8 hours. Let it sit for 1-2 minutes before scooping the ice cream out.
