    What is taro ice cream?

Taro ice cream is a popular Asian flavored ice cream. It is light purple and similar to ube, purple yam. However, taro is not the same as ube. Taro is a tropical root plant and food staple in African, Oceanic and South Asian cultures. In general, taro is less sweeter than ube.

Also, most taro ice creams don't taste much like taro at all because they do not use fresh taro root. Often, it uses taro powder instead. In this homemade taro root ice cream recipe, I use taro boba powder.

Asians love to add taro flavored into their food and drink such taiyaki, taro buns, taro boba drinks and taro sago dessert. Taro ice cream is one of my childhood favorites and I miss it so much. Therefore, I try to make it at home.

What are the ingredients for a homemade taro root ice cream recipe?

The ingredients for homemade taro root ice cream are milk, sweet condensed milk, taro boba powder and heavy whipping cream.

    FAQs:

What does taro and taro ice cream taste like?

Taro lovers describe its flavor as sweet and nutty. When taro is cooked, it tastes much similar to sweet potatoes. While fried taro, it tastes like potato.

In creamy drinks or ice cream, such as taro bubble drink or taro ice cream, it definitely has a different flavor. Instead of potato, it resembles vanilla aroma and is creamy. If you like taro boba drinks, you will like this taro ice cream.

    Why is taro powder purple?

The rich purple color of the taro bubble powder comes mostly from food coloring. However, you can use natural purple ube powder for coloring if you like.

Is taro and ube the same?

Taro is a tropical root plant and food staple in African, Oceanic, and South Asian cultures. In general, taro is less sweeter than ube. Also, ube is yam and the purple color is darker than taro. They are not the same, but similar starchy food.

I don't have a recipe for using only real taro for ice cream yet because I know it will not taste the same. However, I will test it out in the future.
